Story Featured in Horizon League's Weekly Recap

CHICAGO – Redshirt sophomore forward Ruvanna Campbell (Chicago, Ill./Crane/La Salle) has been named the Horizon League “Player of the Week" by College Sports Madness. This is the second weekly honor the Flames have received from College Sports Madness this season (Rachel Story – Nov. 25).

UIC (6-2) won its sixth consecutive game last Saturday (Dec. 7) with a 62-57 victory over Butler inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. Campbell had 14 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.

Campbell helped neutralize Butler center Liz Stratman, who entered the contest averaging a team-high 16.4 points per game and was held to eight points in only 24 minutes of action. She added two blocks and two steals in 36 minutes on the floor. Campbell had eight points and six rebounds in the first half.

Campbell has made an immediate impact at UIC after sitting out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules. The 6-foot-3 forward has averaged 15.0 points, 10.9 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.6 blocks over the first eight games of the season. In the Horizon League, Campbell ranks first in rebounds, second in field-goal percentage (.517), third in blocks, third in offensive rebounds (4.0 per game), eighth in steals and tenth in scoring.

Campbell owns two 20-point efforts this season and has been in double-figures in every game. She leads the Horizon League in both double-doubles (6) and 10-plus rebound performances (6). In the nation, Campbell ranks sixth in double-doubles, 22nd in rebounds, 79th in blocked shots and 83rd in field-goal percentage.

Campbell sat out the entire 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules. She spent one year with La Salle (2011-12) and ranked as the Atlantic 10's top freshmen rebounder (7.6) and shot blocker (1.5). Campbell started 25 games for the Explorers and averaged 28.2 minutes per game.

The Flames’ 6-2 record is the best start in 12 seasons and equals the best eight-game start in the Division I era. Since UIC became a Division I member in 1980-81, the Flames have been 6-2 to start a season twice (1995-96 & 2001-02).

It is also the Flames’ first six-game win streak since Jan. 11-Feb. 3, 2007 in the midst of a program-record 11 consecutive victories. Four of the six victories have been over 2012-13 WNIT participants (Idaho State, Miami Ohio, Texas Southern and Butler).

UIC is next in action Dec. 18 when the Flames travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on Western Michigan (3-5). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT inside University Arena. A win would match the 2001-02 squad for the best nine-game start (7-2) in the Division I era.
