Nov. 30, 2009
CHICAGO - The UIC women's basketball team returns to the hardwood tonight hoping to win its second consecutive game of the season against the visiting Dayton Flyers. The Flames (1-4) dominated inside their last time out, outrebounding Niagara, 60-37, and outscoring the Purple Eagles, 42-8, in the paint en route to a 77-59 victory, the team's first of the season. It was a total team effort for UIC to come up with their first win of the season. Seniors Cassie Johnson and Jessie Miller, and sophomore Jasmine Bailey all recorded double-doubles for UIC. Miller led the way in scoring by pouring in 25 points, including five three-pointers. The Burnsville, Minn. native also grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out four assists and collected two steals in her most complete game of the season. Miller entered the game trailing Krystal Hugelier (2003-06) by 18 points for 10th place on UIC's all-time scoring list. By netting 25 points, Miller now owns that spot with 1,129 career points in a Flames uniform. She trails Chrissy Dizon (2002-06) by 53 points for ninth place. Bailey and Johnson controlled the boards and each established a new career high in the game with 15 and 14 rebounds, respectively. Johnson also added three blocked shots and now owns sole possession of fourth place on the school's all-time blocked shots list with 122. Freshman Lauren Gatto recorded a career-high seven rebounds with all of them coming on the offensive end. Sophomore Shameia Green tied a career high with six assists. "Our kids were bound and determined to get this thing right," said head coach Lisa Ryckbosch after the game. "We were certainly able to do that." Dayton (5-1) enters the game as winners of its last four games, all of which have been on the road. The Flyers knocked off Chicago State, 82-51, in their most recent outing on Saturday afternoon. Tonight marks the fifth meeting between UIC and Dayton, but the first since 1988. The Flyers have won all four of the previous contests. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. tonight at the UIC Pavilion.
