Women's Basketball Loses Season Opener To Eastern Michigan, 61-49
Nov. 13, 2009
CHICAGO - In the season opener for both teams, Eastern Michigan defeated the UIC women's basketball team, 61-49, on Friday night at the UIC Pavilion. Both teams showed some season-opening jitters early on in the game, but it was the Flames (0-1) who led by one at the half, 24-23. The Eagles came out and controlled the pace for much of the second half. A lay-up by freshman Chenise Miller (14 points) gave the Eagles (1-0) their biggest lead of the night, 55-41, with 3:43 to play. UIC would cut the deficit down to 10 on a Jasmine Bailey bucket moments later, but that's as close as the Flames would get. The Flames could not come up with the big defensive stops they needed in the second half, according to head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. "I was pleased with our defensive effort in the first half, " said Ryckbosch. "Unfortunately, we couldn't sustain it the whole game. We gave up 18 second-chance shots, easy baskets. We have to clean that up." The Flames were led on the night by senior Cassie Johnson, who scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in 27 minutes of play. Fellow senior Jessie Miller was also in double figures with 12 points. With her 12-point performance, Miller moved into 11th place on the all-time leading scoring list for UIC, passing Jacquese Gilbert (1988-91) and Toni Stachon (1975-78). Miller now has 1,076 career points as a member of the Flames. Freshmen Taylor Foulks and Lauren Gatto made their collegiate debuts for UIC on Friday. Foulks knocked down a three pointer in the first half for her first points as a Flame, while Gatto added five points and five rebounds. UIC returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they hit the road for the first time this season to take on the Bradley Braves at 2:05 p.m.
