Women's Basketball Faces Lewis In First Exhibition Contest

Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's basketball team kicks off its exhibition season on Thursday night (Nov. 6) when they face Lewis at the UIC Pavilion. The Flames and Flyers are set to square off at 7 p.m. CST in one of UIC's two preseason contests before the start of the 2008-09 regular season. UIC hosts St. Xavier in its final tune-up on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. The Flames then open the 2008-09 season with a battle against Bradley on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at home. The Flames return four starters, including 2008-09 Preseason All-Horizon League Second Team selection Jessie Miller. The junior guard finished the 2007-08 season ranked seventh in the league with 14.0 points per game. Miller also capped the season with a fourth-place finish in three-point field goals with 2.1 treys per game. Also returning to the court for the Flames are juniors Cassie Johnson and Briana Hinkle. Johnson led the league with 1.5 blocks per game, while also ranking 14th in rebounds (5.3 rpg). After earning a starting nod her sophomore year, Hinkle finished the season tied for sixth in the league in steals (1.9 spg). Rounding out the returners from 2007-08 is senior Nikki Grobbecker. The center finished the season ranked fourth in the league with 6.6 rebounds per game.
