Seniors Bailey and Green Named to Preseason All-League Teams
Oct. 19, 2011
CHICAGO – UIC women’s basketball seniors Jasmine Bailey and Shamiea Green were honored with preseason All-Horizon League distinctions on Wednesday, announced by the conference office. Bailey earned first-team honors while Green picked up second-team accolades, making UIC the only school in the league with two players on the first or second team. The league preseason poll was also revealed as the Flames were tabbed fifth with 186 points. Voters of the poll included coaches, media and sports information directors.
Bailey finished last season ranked third in the Horizon League with 9.3 rebounds per game and 2.5 steals per contest. Her 279 boards in 2010-11 ranks 10th all-time in single-season program annals. She was a top-20 league-scorer, averaging 10.5 ppg. and led the team with a .462 field goal percentage. The 2009 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year ranks sixth all-time in program history with 718 rebounds, needing 347 more to claim the top spot. The senior ranks 10th all-time in steals with 182 and 16th in career scoring with 986 points. Bailey owns the UIC single-season record for highest field-goal percentage with a .583 clip, set in the 2009-10 campaign.
“Jasmine is a person who leads by example,” said head coach Regina Miller. “She’s not so much a vocal player, but more of a silent assassin. She has the ability to score quick points and grab a lot of boards for us.”
Green is the Horizon League’s fourth leading returning scorer, averaging 14.4 ppg. She paced UIC in scoring in 14 of 30 games last season and tallied three 30-plus point performances. She trails Bailey in career scoring by a mere 15 points with 971, ranking 17th all-time. The sharpshooter ranks eighth all-time in free throw percentage with a .752 mark and led the Flames with a .321 three-point percentage last year.
“Shamiea is a strong leader on and off the court,” said Miller. “She has been asked to take on responsibilities that she isn’t used to and her willingness to accept those are indicative of her leadership skills.”
The Normandy High School teammates look to crack the 1,000-career point barrier early this season as they would become just the 16th and 17th players in program history to do so. Combined, the duo has played in 179 games with 163 starts. Bailey and Green account for nearly 55 percent of their squad’s total returning offense from 2010-11.
“We expect those two to continue to provide leadership this season,” said Miller. “I always tell them it’s action not position, and they have maintained a healthy attitude toward that so far.”
The Flames begin competition with a home-exhibition game against St. Xavier on Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. CST. Regular season play commences on Nov.12 as UIC welcomes Drake for a 3.p.m. CT tip.
