CHICAGO - The 2013-14 women's basketball season officially began for the UIC Flames and third-year head coach Regina Miller on Thursday morning (Oct. 3). The squad worked out for three hours inside the Flames Athletic Center.

As she begins her third year in charge of the Flames, Miller came away from Thursday’s practice encouraged with what she saw.

"It was great to hold our first official practice,” said Miller. “We have many returners from last season and today was mostly review for the majority of our team. However, the upperclassmen have done a fantastic job helping the newcomers integrate into our system. Great beginnings lead to great endings and today was a great beginning.”

The Flames return three starters in Katie Hannemann, Rachel Story, and Terri Bender. This year's team consists of four newcomers (one transfer) alongside nine returners (four seniors, one junior and four sophomores). Nearly 82 percent of last year’s offense is back for the 2013-14 season.

Hannemann and Story were both All-Horizon League honorees from last season. Hannemann (13.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 31.3 mpg) was voted to the second-team All-League, while Story (15.6 ppg, 3.7 apg, 36.3 mpg) was selected to the All-Newcomer squad. The duo combined to average nearly 30 points per game and led the Flames in scoring in 24 of their 29 regular season contests.

The Flames will also welcome the services of redshirt sophomore forward Ruvanna Campbell, a 6-foot-2 transfer from La Salle who sat out the entire 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Campbell started 25 of the 30 games she appeared in as a freshman in 2011-12 and was the top freshman rebounder (7.6 rpg) and shot blocker (1.5 bpg) in the Atlantic 10 conference.

Miller also added two new assistant coaches to the program over the summer. Eric Simpson, who served as the head coach at Loyola University Chicago the past four seasons, and Tiffany Sardin, a Chicago native and three-year captain for the University of Virginia, joined the coaching staff in July 2013.

The Flames' lone exhibition game is 30 days away, a home matchup with Elmhurst College on Saturday, Nov. 2. The regular season opener is six days later (Friday, Nov. 8) when St. Xavier visits the UIC Pavilion.
