As the 2010-2011 academic year approaches, UIC takes a look back at the previous year in athletics.

CHICAGO - The UIC women's basketball team battled some of the best in 2009-10, facing the likes of Butler, Green Bay, Cleveland State, Bradley, Dayton, DePaul, Illinois State and Minnesota.

One of the highlights from the memorable campaign was the program's first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent when they bested the Green Bay Phoenix, 81-72, at the UIC Pavilion on Jan. 23.

The Flames also played well on the road winning seven games, five games better than the previous year.

As a team, UIC led the Horizon League in blocked shots per game (4.5), ranked second in offensive rebounds per game (12.5), ranked third in rebounding (36.6) and fourth in scoring (62.8).

Cassie Johnson was the leader of the block party for the Flames and the entire Horizon League, averaging two blocked shots per game. The senior finished with 56 blocks on the season, third most in a season in Flames history and ranked 37th in the country. On Jan. 14th at Detroit, Johnson passed Sharon Carroll (149) to become the all-time leading shot blocker in UIC history and finished with 164.

The Flames were led offensively by All-Horizon League Second Team member, senior Jessie Miller. Miller averaged a team-high 13.7 points per game which ranked seventh in the Horizon League. The senior also received Horizon League Player of the Week honors on Feb. 1 after scoring a career-high 29 points against Loyola on Jan. 30.

Miller finished her career as UIC's fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,466 points, first in three-point attempts with 625, finished fourth in school history with 201 three-point field goals and fifth place on the all-time steals list with 199.

Leading the Flames defensively was All-Defensive Team and All-Horizon League Second Team honoree, Jasmine Bailey. The sophomore played in all thirty games for UIC, starting in twenty-nine. Bailey was second in scoring for the Flames (12.0 ppg) and led the team in steals throughout the season (61). The St. Louis, Mo. native led the Horizon League in field goal percentage (.583; 133-of-228), set UIC's single-season record for field goal percentage in a season (min. 100 FGA) and led the team and ranked fourth in the conference in rebounding (8.1 rpg). Bailey was voted Horizon League Player of the week on one occasion following a 24-point, 14-rebound, five-assist and three-steal performance in the win over Green Bay.

Taylor Foulks earned a spot on the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team. The freshman made the most three-pointers on the team (57) and ranked fifth in the Horizon League. The Joliet, Ill. native also had the highest three-point percentage (.354; 57-for-161) ranking seventh in the Horizon League.

Kristen Petrinec boasted the squad's highest GPA was named UIC Female Academic Athlete of the Year at the Academic Night of Success in April. The junior carries a 3.96 GPA.

UIC's run at the Horizon League Championship came to an end against Cleveland State. Bailey put up a team-high and career-high 27 points, two assists, two steals and one block for the Flames, but they fell just short losing, 78-72.

The Flames open up their 2010-2011 campaign at Niagara Friday, Nov. 12.
