CHICAGO - Former UIC women’s basketball standout, Jasmine Bailey, recently finished her first season of professional basketball with Sf. Gheorghe in Romania. During the regular season, Bailey led her team in points (17.4) and steals (2.8) per game, while ranking second in rebounds (7.4), assists (3.4) and blocked shots (0.6). Sf. Gheorghe ended their regular season fourth in the Liga Standings with a 20-7 record.
“My role is to play intense defense and to be aggressive on offense with shooting, driving or looking for open players,” Bailey said when asked about her role on the team. “I have more confidence in my shot and have learned to be more patient.”
Bailey guided her team into the playoffs before losing in the second round to Alba lulia. In her two playoff games, she contributed a combined 25 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists. Although her efforts were not enough to keep her team in the competition to win the Romanian Cup, Bailey definitely had a season to be proud of.
She played in all 29 games and tallied a career high 36 points against Rapid on February 9, 2013 where she shot a stellar 79% from the field.
With her team falling short of the Romanian Cup and with an impressive first year under her belt, Bailey will be someone to lookout for next season.
“It’s time to get more focused and take it to another level especially since we were so close to winning the cup,” Bailey said.
