Chicago, Ill. - University of Illinois at Chicago's Zvjezdana Malesevic (Banja Luka, Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Footscray City College) was named Midwestern Collegiate Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week it was announced earlier today.
The freshman went 2-1 in the No. 5 singles slot last weekend as the Flames competed in a trio of road matches. She defeated Kerry Pastein of Michigan State (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) on Friday and Christy Helsinger of Eastern Michigan (7-5, 6-2) on Saturday, before falling in her Sunday match to Diana Dimitrescu of Western Michigan (6-0, 6-1).
Zvjezdana's win on Saturday was especially key as the Flames won by a single point over Eastern Michigan, 4-3. Since joining her sister, Zorica, on the team at the semester break, she has compiled a 5-2 singles record and 1-0 doubles mark.
The Flames, 3-5 this season, will play a pair of home matches this weekend at the Oak park-River Forest Racquet Club. On Friday, UIC hosts Cincinnati at 2:00 p.m., before welcoming Ball State on Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
