Women's Basketball Travels To Valparasio Saturday
Feb. 18, 2011
VALPARAISO, Ind. - The UIC women's basketball team will finish a brief two-game road trip on Saturday morning when it takes on the Valparaiso Crusaders at 11:05 a.m. at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
The Flames (11-13, 6-7 Horizon League) dropped the first game of the swing through Indiana when they fell to the Butler Bulldogs on Thursday night, 78-57. The Bulldogs were on fire, particularly in the first half when they shot 71.4-percent (10-for-14) from beyond the arc. On the flip side, UIC struggled to put the ball in the hoop all evening long, shooting just 33.9-percent (21-for-62) in the loss.
Shameia Green led three Flames in double figures on Thursday night with 14 points, while Kiara Strickland chipped in with 11 points and tied Green with a team-high six rebounds. Briana Hinkle also added 10 points and a game-high four assists. The Bexley, Ohio native currently leads the Flames and the Horizon League and ranks 14th in the NCAA with 3.1 steals per contest.
The Crusaders (7-19, 4-10) trailed the visiting Loyola Ramblers by 13 points on Thursday night with just over six minutes to play, but a lay-up by Skyler Gick with 15 seconds left in the game gave Valpo a lead that it would not relinquish. The win was the third straight on the home floor for the Crusaders who also knocked off Wright State and Detroit in their last two home games prior to the win over Loyola.
Betsy Adams has carried the bulk of the load offensively this season for Valpo, averaging a team best 13.4 points per game. A three-point specialist has scored 56-percent of her points (195-of-348) from beyond the arc this season. Freshman Tabitha Gerardot has also had a strong impact in her inaugural campaign as she is averaging 10.6 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game this season.
Valparaiso leads the all-time series between the two schools, 20-14, however, the Flames won the first meeting between the two earlier this year on Jan. 20, 62-43. Jasmine Bailey had 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead UIC to victory that day. Last season, each team won on the opponent's home floor.
