Chicago, Ill. - Mississippi reserve guard Elizabeth Candale converted a free-throw with 22 seconds left in the game to help the Rebels squeak past the University of Illinois at Chicago women's basketball team for a 65-64 victory and the UIC Thanksgiving Tournament title at the UIC Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.

Candale finished with a team-high 16 points, while fellow reserve Genice Terry chipped in 10 points.

With the victory, Mississippi improves to 3-0 on the season, while UIC drops to 3-1.

Seniors LeKesha Williams and Jaysie Chambers paced the UIC offensive attack on Sunday afternoon. Williams, a guard, poured in 16 points for the Flames, while Chambers posted her third double-double in as many games with 16 points and 11 rebounds on the day.

"We were in position to beat a SEC team," UIC head coach Lisa Ryckbosch said. "Now our next step is to win the game."

The contest was a see-saw affair that featured 11 lead changes and seven ties throughout the course of the game.

UIC took a 30-28 lead into halftime and extended the lead to six points as Williams converted a three-pointer at the 12:45 mark of the second half to give the Flames a 45-39 lead.

Mississippi, however, would not budge as the Rebels went on a 9-2 run, led by seven points from guard Ellen Buchanan (9 points) to take a 48-47 lead over the Flames.

UIC put forth a valiant comeback as the Flames clawed for a 64-64 tie behind a Chambers' jumper with 32 seconds remaining in the contest.

Mississippi called a time-out on the ensuing possession as Cansdale drove towards the basket on an inbounds play and was promptly fouled by UIC's Tina Thompson with 22 seconds left in the game.

Cansdale hit the front end of the pair of shots, which gave the Flames the opportunity for some late-game heroics.

Senior point guard Consuela Hall heaved a three-point attempt at the buzzer which fell short and gave Mississippi the victory.

UIC will be back in action on Tuesday night, as they will travel to the south side of Chicago to take on the Chicago State Cougars at 7:00 p.m.
