Flames Fall Short Against Loyola on Senior Day, 78-68

CHICAGO - Senior guard Taylor Foulks poured in 16 points in her final game at the UIC Pavilion, but the UIC women's basketball team came up short in a 78-68 decision against visiting Loyola in the regular season Horizon League finale for both teams Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, UIC moved to 9-20 on the season, wrapping up Horizon League play with a 5-11 record. Loyola improved to 15-14 and 10-6. The Flames and Ramblers split the season series after UIC posted a 73-62 win at Gentile Arena on Jan. 12.
Junior guard Rachel Story scored a team-high 20 points, and was joined in double figures by Foulks (16 points) and junior center Katie Hanneman (10). Fellow senior Heidi Dahnke chipped in six points and swiped four steals. Loyola was led by Simone Law, who poured in a game-high 21 points on eight field goals.
Loyola led 35-26 at halftime after starting out the game on a 7-0 run. The Flames went on a 9-4 spurt over a six and a half minute span mid-way through the frame, pulling within 21-18 with 5:53 remaining. But the Ramblers finished the half on a 14-8 run, building a double-digit (35-24) lead with less than 30 seconds remaining. Story converted a layup with seven seconds left, pulling the Flames back within three possessions heading into the locker room at intermission.
UIC was forced into a timeout just over five minutes into the second half (14:54) after Loyola extended its lead to 13 points, 48-35. Story converted a transition three-pointer with 12:58 remaining, pulling the Flames within 50-40. But UIC could draw no closer, falling behind by a game-high 18 points, 64-46, with 6:26 left.
UIC has clinched the No. 9 seed in next week's Horizon League Tournament. The Flames will travel to No. 8 Valparaiso on Monday, March 11. UIC and Valpo split the regular season series, with both teams winning on their respective home courts.
