Women's Basketball Sees Streak Snapped At Cleveland State, 62-51
Feb. 4, 2010
CLEVELAND - The UIC women's basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped on Thursday night at the hands of the Cleveland State Vikings, 62-51. The Flames (9-12, 6-4 Horizon League) did not shoot the ball as well as they had during the recent streak. In two wins against Green Bay and Loyola, UIC shot over 50 percent; in tonight's loss to the Vikings (11-10, 6-4 Horizon League), the Flames were 18-for-55 (32.7 percent) from the field. "What they were doing defensively kind of got us off track," said head coach Lisa Ryckbosch after the game. "Instead of continuing to try and execute our stuff, we just stopped and stood around." The Vikings used a 17-5 second-half run to take a lead 50-40 lead that they would not relinquish. Shawnita Garland capped the run with a fastbreak lay-up off an assist from teammate Kailey Klein. "We got a little lead going and we let up on the defensive end," said Ryckbosch about her team's brief four-point advantage. "Garland got going and that was all she wrote." Garland, who was held scoreless in the first half, exploded for 18 points in the game's final 20 minutes. Cleveland State controlled the interior for most of the game, collecting 45 rebounds and netting 17second-chance points. For the Vikings in the first half, it was all Klein who scored 13 of her team's 22 points in the opening frame. Cleveland State led at the break, 22-21. Klein finished with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Taylor Foulks made her third career start for the Flames and led the team in the first half with nine points and three steals. The Joliet, Ill. native finished with a career-high 20 points and five steals in the loss. Jasmine Bailey was the leading rebounder for the Flames on Thursday night, collecting eight boards to go with her nine points.
Foulks was the lone exception in UIC's poor shooting night, going 8-for-14 (57 percent) from the field, including 4-for-10 (40 percent) from beyond the arc. However, she also registered a game-high seven turnovers. "I'm thrilled that she was able to give us some offense, I'm glad that she's getting her hands on the ball and getting some steals, but not the seven turnovers," said Ryckbosch. "Most of those [turnovers] were her trying to do too much and not making the simple pass." The Flames will conclude their three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Youngstown State Penguins. That game will tip-off at 1:05 p.m. CT.
