GREEN BAY, Wis. - The UIC women's basketball team (11-3, 0-1 HL) had its 11-game win streak snapped Wednesday (Jan. 8) in a 66-50 road loss to Green Bay (8-5, 1-0 HL) at the Kress Center. Green Bay finished the contest on a 19-5 run and held UIC to 26.9 percent shooting in the second half.
Katie Hannemann (12 points and 11 rebounds) led the Flames in the Horizon League opener for both teams. Ruvanna Campbell also scored 12 points and added seven rebounds while Rachel Story contributed 11 points. Kaili Lukan poured in a game-high 22 points for Green Bay while Tesha Buck scored 20, including 17 in the second half.
“Tonight’s game was back and forth and well played,” said head coach Regina Miller. “We were very aggressive on both ends in the first half and denied their scorers good looks. We struggled to get started offensively after halftime while (Kaili) Lukan and (Tesha) Buck made a lot of plays in the second half.”
UIC was out-rebounded (39-31) for just the second time all season and the first time since the season-opening loss against St. Xavier (Nov. 8). Green Bay grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second-chance points. The Phoenix also outscored the Flames 34-24 in the paint.
Green Bay scored 19 points off 19 UIC turnovers and held the Flames to 36.4 percent shooting overall (20-of-55). The Phoenix went to the free throw line eight more times than the Flames and shot 50 percent from the field in the second half.
The Phoenix ran out to a 15-2 lead at 15:22 in the first half before UIC began its comeback. The Flames went on a 23-7 run and took a 25-22 lead on Campbell’s layup with 5:50 left before halftime. Sam Terry’s three-pointer tied the contest at 29-29 going into the break.
Campbell’s jumper with 16:06 remaining gave UIC its first lead of the second half at 36-34. Green Bay would go ahead by four before Hannemann’s layup with 11:34 left narrowed the Phoenix lead to 47-45. Hannemann’s bucket was UIC’s final field goal of the contest as the Flames were held to five free throws the rest of the way.
Hannemann’s effort was her fourth double-double of the season and first since Nov. 30 against Texas Southern. She had eight points and six rebounds in the second half.
Campbell picked up her team-high 13th double-digit performance of the season. She had eight points in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting. Campbell also added two steals and owns 24 this season.
Story extended her double-figure scoring streak to 15 contests dating back to last season. She scored nine points on 4-of-10 shooting in the first half.
Green Bay is 53-1 against Horizon League opponents at the Kress Center. Over the last three seasons, the Phoenix own a 52-1 record in Horizon League regular season contests.
UIC continues Horizon League play at home Saturday (Jan. 11) against Youngstown State (4-9, 0-0 HL). The contest is set to begin at 3 p.m. CT inside the UIC Pavilion. The Flames dropped both meetings with the Penguins last season, including a 67-57 defeat on Jan. 31, 2013 at the UIC Pavilion.
