CHICAGO - The UIC cross country team travels to Terre Haute, Ind., to compete in the ISU Pre-National Invitational Saturday, October 19.  The men's 8K blue race is set to start at 11:00 a.m. CT, and the women's 6K blue race will begin at 11:40 a.m.

"This weekend will indicate if the men and women have the intensity needed for high level competition," said head coach Jim Knoedel.  "As the season draws to an end, every athlete has to give it that extra that they may not have had to use at some of the early meets. Its "gut check" time!"

The teams will be running against tough challengers this weekend, including conference rival Youngstown State, as well as, Big-Ten opposition Penn State, Ohio State, Iowa and Illinois.

Last weekend at the UW-Lucian Invite, the men's team finished eighth overall with major contributions from Photis Karkalis (26:10.9), Kyle Hauser (26.28.1) and Thomas Kohs (26:43.8).  The men look to step-up competition this weekend in preparation for the Horizon League Championship in two weeks.

"Every time competition gets tougher I emphasize to all my athletes that they need to continue to race, to continue to respond to the competition's pace," said Knoedel.  "The goal of every race is to win, and that starts with going head-to-head with each of your adversaries."

Last weekend, the women's squad had three runners clock in personal records in the 5K race. Runners included Lauren Lindholm (18:32.6), Rebecca Zaiter (18:48.1) and Tess Ehrhardt (17:35.7).  In addition, Ehrhardt was honored with her third consecutive Horizon League Runner of the Week title. The 6K course will provide a challenge to the normal 5K race that the women will face at the Horizon League meet.

"It's certainly more of a challenge for the women but we do quite a bit of weekly mileage so they are certainly prepared for the extra distance," said Knoedel.

The ISU Pre-National Invitational is the final contest before the Horizon League Championship on Nov. 9.
