Preston and Niyork Garner Weekly Horizon League Honors
Oct. 10, 2012
CHICAGO - Freshmen Emma Preston and Pat Niyork have been selected as the Horizon League’s Cross Country Runners of the Week for the period of Oct. 1-7. The duo paced their respective teams at the 2012 Lucian Rosa Invitational this past Saturday as Preston finished 7th in the 5K race and Niyork crossed the line in 35th place in the 8K competition. Flames’ runners have now collected three weekly conference accolades this season, more than any other league school.
In her first race since Sept. 14, Preston posted a time of 18:28.50 and led the Flames for the third time this season. The East Peoria, Ill., native just missed her season-best of 18:17.00 by less than 12 seconds.
“Emma has worked very hard this fall,” said head coach Jim Knoedel. “It’s exciting to see the progress she has made as a cross country runner. I think she came into UIC believing she was much stronger in track but I know before she graduates she will be dominant in both.”
Niyork crossed the tape at 26:08.00 and has now fronted the Flames in three consecutive races.
“Pat has such a great attitude and pushes himself so hard on all the tough workouts,” said head coach Jim Knoedel. “I expect him to challenge any of the Horizon League frosh for the Newcomer of the Year.”
UIC will conclude regular season action this Friday at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill., as the meet is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. CT. on the Newman Golf Course.
