CHICAGO – UIC freshman Billy Clink earned the Horizon League’s first Cross Country Male Runner of the Week award for the 2012 season on Tuesday.  Clink earned runner-up honors in his first collegiate race on Saturday at the UIC Home Opener, piloting the Flames’ squad to a team title.

“I am thrilled that Billy won the award,” said head coach Jim Knoedel.  “He was actually in the lead at the three-mile mark and almost came away with the victory.  He will certainly be a factor for Horizon League Newcomer of the Year.”

Clink traversed the 4.1-mile Willow Springs course in a time of 21:11.30, missing the top spot by less than 13 seconds.  Clink led a talented pack of UIC runners that finished six within the top 10 and nine in the top 20.  The Flames bested four other cross country programs in Chicago State, St. Xavier and Horizon League-foes Green Bay and Milwaukee.

UIC returns to action this Friday (Sept. 7) at the Northern Illinois Invitational in DeKalb, Ill. with a scheduled start time of 5:45 p.m. CT.
