Chicago, Ill.- UIC junior runner Alex Sutphen (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates H.S.) was named the Horizon League Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 4, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Sutphen paced the Flames at the 11th annual UIC Home Opener on Saturday, turning in a team-leading 21:37 in the 4.1-mile event to finish sixth overall.

The third-year standout guided UIC to a second-place finish at the Opener, marking the 10th consecutive season that UIC has finished no lower than second place as a team in the annual lidlifter.

UIC returns to competition at the Illinois Intercollegiate Invitational in Normal, Ill. on Sept. 14th.
