CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's cross country programs will kick off the 2014 season by hosting the UIC Home Opener on Saturday at Lewis University Cross Country Course in Romeoville, Ill. Competition begins at 10 a.m. CT with the women's 4k race, followed by the men's 6k race, which is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
Last season the women's squad took home second place in the Horizon League for the third year in a row, while the men's squad finished in sixth. All eyes will be on Tess Ehrhardt as she kicks off her senior campaign following last season's first-place Horizon League finish and Women's Athlete of the Year title.
Alongside Ehrhardt, the Flames welcome back seniors Rebecca Zaiter and juniors Lauren Lindholm and Emma Preston, who all finished in the top 20 at last year's Horizon League Championship. The women's squad adds five newcomers this season in Michelle Borycki, Genevieve Johanet, Sophia Ou, Lili Ruiz and Ellie Willging.
On the men's side, senior Gunnar Sterne looks to lead UIC to a successful year joined by juniors Lucas Beltran, Marcus Garcia and Cody Lee and sophomores Kyle Hauser and Neel Patel. Joining the Flames this season are freshmen Alex Bashqawi, Zade Kurdieh and Brixton Rill.
Fellow Horizon League members Green Bay and Milwaukee will also be competing at the UIC Home Opener, as well as non-conference foe Chicago State.
Following this weekend's home meet, the Flames will travel to Normal, Ill. for the Illinois State Invitational on Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. UIC will participate in five meets this season, with the Horizon League Championship slated for Nov. 1.
