`Forty Flames to Follow' in 2013-14: Angelos Karkalis
July 9, 2013
CHICAGO - Senior-to-be Angelos Karkalis began last year's competitive running season with a bang as he piloted the UIC men's cross country team to a runner-up trophy at the Horizon League Championships, the program's best finish since 2006. Karkalis earned a spot on the All-Conference First Team as he placed sixth in the HL meet with an 8K time of 25:27, a mere three seconds off his personal best. Karkalis would go on to post team-leading times during the indoor and outdoor season, making him a prime candidate for Tuesday's `Forty Flames to Follow' segment.
After a highly successful cross country season, Karkalis followed that up with a stellar indoor campaign. He posted an indoor career-best mark in the 800 meters at the Horizon League Championships with a time of 1:53.40 in the prelims. In that same meet, Karkalis recorded a fifth-place finish in the mile run with a result of 4:19.16. Earlier in the year, he posted a team-leading mile time of 4:17.59 at the NCC Cardinal Open on Jan. 18. Karkalis also posted the Flames' best time in the 3,000 m. (8:48.31), crossing the tape fourth at the Carthage Tadd Metzger Invitational on Jan. 25. He was named the Horizon League's Runner of the Week on Feb. 19 for his 800 m. performance at the Milwaukee Panther Tune-Up, crossing the finish line first with a time of 1:53.53.
During the outdoor season, Karkalis paced the Flames in both the 1,500 m. and 3,000 m. steeplechase. The Mount Prospect, Ill., native logged his team-leading 1,500 m. time of 3:58.21 at the Benedictine Twilight Invitational on April 26 as he finished fifth in a star-studded field. At the Horizon League Outdoor Championships, Karkalis took home third-place accolades in the 3,000 m. steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:39.57.
Karkalis also serves as a model student-athlete for UIC as he was selected to the Horizon League's Fall, Winter and Spring All-Academic Team, along with garnering a spot on the league's Academic Honor Roll.
Karkalis and the UIC cross country squad will look to improve upon their second-place trophy at this year's conference meet as the team begins competition for the 2013 season on Aug. 31 at the UIC Opener in Palos Heights, Ill.
