CHICAGO, Ill. – The UIC men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to Naperville, Ill., Friday May 9, to compete in the Dr. Keeler Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. CT, with the women’s javelin throw, directly followed by long jump, triple jump, high jump and shot put.
“The Dr. Keeler Meet this weekend is one of two remaining opportunities to qualify for the NCAA West Regional in Fayetteville, AK, May 29-31, and we'll only have a small group,” said head coach Jim Knoedel.
At the 2013 Dr. Keeler Invitational, the women’s squad was led by junior Tess Ehrhardt who finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She crossed the finish line in 10:58.91, setting a school record with her performance.
Teammate Rebecca Zaiter also had a notable performance in the 1,500-meter run, recording a time of 4:48.75.
“Rebecca Zaiter will need to break 2:09 to get into the Regional Meet, so she has a very realistic shot,” said Knoedel. “The past two years at this same meet she has run her 800-meter personal record and we're hoping that she can do it again.”
On the men’s side in 2013, Angelos Karkalis contributed a strong finish in the 800-meter run crossing the line in 1:54.45.
The Flames are coming off a solid showing from last week’s Horizon League Championship, where the men’s team took home fourth place and the women secured fifth.
“This weekend we have two athletes going after a top 48 mark,” said Knoedel. Sharon Mwale cleared 5'5.25" to win at the HL Meet and had some very good jumps at 5'6" so we want to give her another shot because she is "hot" at the right time of the year.”
