CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's track & field teams will compete in split squad action this weekend, heading to the Benedictine Twilight on Friday afternoon, and the 104th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, this weekend.

The Benedictine Twilight will be held at The Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex, which is equipped with a nine-lane competition track. Field events are set to get underway at 3:00 p.m., beginning with the hammer and discus throws. Throughout the meet, men's events will precede the women's events.

"Benedictine has a very fast track and we always seem to produce some of our best times so Friday night will be exciting to watch," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "The weather is finally going to be cooperative, so we should see a lot of our student-athletes turn in top-10 marks on the Horizon League list. This is our last meet prior to the League meet and we have backed off training this week so they should be rested and ready for top-notch efforts."

Running events are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m., with the 4x100 relay kicking off the festivities. The 3,000-meter steeplechase, 1,500-meter run, 110/100-meter hurdles, 400-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 800-meter run, 400-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, 3,000-meter run and 4x400 relay will also be held in succession.

The prestigious Drake Relays got underway on Tuesday, and will run through Saturday. Nearly 8,000 college and high school student-athletes will participate in the 104th running of the event. The Relays will also be featured prominently on the ESPN family of networks with a tape-delayed broadcast on Saturday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. CT. Friday's events will be shown live on ESPN3 starting at 6:30 p.m. CT.

UIC will be sending Jaime Johnson, Emma Preston, Tess Ehrhardt and Rebecca Zaiter to the Drake Relays to compete in the Distance Medley Relay. Johnson and Ehrhardt will also be competing in the open 1,500-meter run, while Zaiter will be participating in the 800-meter run.

"This is the first time at the Drake Relays for any of these four young ladies, so they will be in for the thrill of a lifetime," Knoedel said. "With a crowd of 16,000 in the stands, I know they will be excited to run, and are looking to break the school record in the DMR."

UIC is coming off a successful showing at last Saturday's (April 20) Huskie Open in DeKalb. The men's and women's teams posted a combined 17 first and second-place finishes, including eight individual titles by the men's squad. Justen Garth (100-meter dash), Roy Mwale (200-meter dash) and Martin Hunter (200-meter dash) all secured NIU Track & Field Complex facility records in their respective sprinting events.

UIC's men's and women's teams enter this weekend's action owning a combined 18 top-five times and/or marks in the Horizon League. The Flames will be prepping for next weekend's Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti, Mich.
