Track & Field Wins Both Team Titles at Cougar Invitational
April 22, 2011
CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's track & field teams recorded a combined 17 individual first-place finishes en route to both team titles at the Cougar Invitational Thursday afternoon.
The Flames finished ahead of second-place Wheaton College on both the men's and women's sides. Cross-town rival Loyola finished eighth overall in men's action, and third in the women's field.
"We were very excited to come out on top for both the men and women," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "We battled some very good teams and responded with great efforts. The men and women took home 17 firsts and a team title in a very competitive meet.
"I was especially pleased with the three individual firsts by Andy Wall and Aimee Schuh, but it was also very nice to have Jaime Johnson step up to win two events and come home with two great times. We produced a lot of season bests and I feel we are very well prepared for the Horizon League meet at Butler in two weeks."
On the men's side, UIC's first-place finishes were as follows: Anthony Hollingsworth in both the 100-meter (10.90) and 200-meter dash (22.24), Angelos Karkalis in the 800-meter run (1:55.74), Sam Kehoe in the 5,000-meter run (14:58.60), Andy Wall in the 110-meter hurdles (15.30), triple jump (13.72 meters) and high jump (2.03 meters) and Nate Kamm in the pole vault (4.35 meters).
In women's action, the Flames' first-place tallies were in the following events: Jaime Johnson in the 800-meter run (2:21.09) and 1,500-meter run (4:50.66), Rosemary Gillam in the 5,000-meter run (18:14.49), Aimee Schuh in the 100-meter (14.68), 400-meter hurdles (1:05.57) and long jump (5.52 meters), Kellie Schuh in the triple jump (11.80 meters), Erin Clark in the hammer throw (46.83 meters) and Katie Wallace in the pole vault (2.80 meters).
Both teams will be idle until next Saturday (April 30), when the Flames head to Indianapolis to compete in the Stan Lyons Invitational at Butler.
