Track & Field Heads to 24th Annual Lee Calhoun Invitational|

CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's track & field teams will make the trek to Macomb, Ill., this weekend to compete in the 24th Annual Lee Calhoun Invitational on the campus of Western Illinois. Competition will run from Friday-Saturday afternoon.
"We haven't been to this meet for a few years but they have really brought in some great competition (Iowa, Illinois, DePaul, Marquette, and UWM) so we expect great performances," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "We have 11 men and six women in the top-five of the Horizon League list right now and I know we'll see a few more in those groups before the weekend is over."
The field will include UIC, Ashford, Augustana (men only), Bradley, Chicago State, Culver-Stockton, DePaul, Hannibal-LaGrange, Illinois (men only), Iowa, Knox, Lincoln, Marquette, Monmouth, Northern Iowa, Quincy, St. Ambrose, Milwaukee and host Western Illinois.
UIC's men's tracksters with top-five times and/or marks are as follows: Anthony Hollingsworth in the 100-meter dash (10.56 seconds; 1st), Roy Mwale in the 400-meter dash (49.11 seconds; 4th), Arash Darbandi in the 10,000-meter run (32:31.58; 3rd), Angelos Karkalis (9:55.27, 3rd) and Photis Karkalis (10:00.70, 4th) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Matt Marzahl in the high jump (1.91 meters; 4th), Seyi Ogunleye (14.92 meters, 1st), Richmond Richter (14.82 meters, 2nd) and Justin Higginbotham (14.59 meters, 3rd) in the triple jump, Zach Harman in the discus throw (42.31 meters, 5th) and Marzahl in the decathlon (5590, 2nd).
On the women's side, UIC's top-five performers are: Ariel Butzine in the 400-meter (56.06 seconds, 3rd), Rebecca Zaiter in the 1,500-meter run (4:33.23, 3rd), Tess Ehrhardt in the 5,000-meter run (17:44.30, 3rd), Jaime Johnson (11:16.06; 3rd) and Ehrhardt (11:13.60, 2nd) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Andrea Crump in the long jump (5.58 meters, 2nd) and triple jump (11.99 meters, t-1st).
Field events are scheduled to get underway at 2:00 p.m. Friday, with the Discus and Javelin Throws, followed by the High Jump and Long Jump. Gia Lewis-Smallwood, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, will be among the field in the Women's Discus Throw.
The track events are slated to begin at 5:00 p.m., with three relays, followed by the 10,000 meter and 5,000 meter runs. The women's races will precede the men's events.
The majority of the mainstream events will be held on Saturday, beginning with the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11:00 a.m. Competition will conclude shortly after 4:00 p.m., wrapping up with the popular 4x400 meter relay.
