April 10, 2014
CHICAGO, Ill., - The Flames track and field program will be traveling to Romeoville, Ill., this weekend to participate in the Chicagoland Championships. The meet is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 11 at 9:00 a.m. CT and conclude action on Saturday.
"Last year we were fourth in the men's standings and sixth on the women's side, but I see no reason we can't be in the top three or four this weekend," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "Twenty-one teams showed up in 2013 so there is always good competition. Consequently, I put the expectation on all of our athletes to turn in their season best performance in every event."
During the 2013 Chicagoland Championship, senior Matt Marzahl competed in the decathlon, setting personal bests in five of the 10 events and claimed first place.
Teammate Seyi Ogunleye took home top-honors in the triple jump with a mark of 14.92 meters.
On the women's side, junior Rebecca Zaiter captured first place in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line with a time of 2:19.20.
"I think as much as anything, the good weather has lifted the spirits of all our athletes and I suspect it will show in the results on Friday and Saturday," said Knoedel.
