Track & Field Travels to Michigan for GVS Tune-Up|
Feb. 20, 2014
CHICAGO, Ill. – The UIC men’s and women’s track & field teams will travel to Allendale, Mich., for the Grand Valley State Bob Eubanks Open. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. CT on Friday, February 21 and will be the final tune-up before the Indoor Track & Field Horizon League Championship.
“The cold weather and snow has been a huge factor this season,” said head coach Jim Knoedel. “We started off much more slowly than we typically do, but I could tell at the Chicagoland Championships that our hard work is finally paying off. Confidence is a huge factor in success and we gained a lot from the competition last weekend.”
Ehrhardt was named Horizon League Runner of the Week after taking home top honors and setting a school record in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:54.74. Zaiter placed first in the 800-meter run crossing the finish line with a time of 2:16.71. Teammate Lindholm competed in the 5,000-meter run finishing with a competitive time of 18:03.64.
“We saw a lot of the team jump into some of the top 5 Horizon League spot, last weekend,” said Knoedel. “We'll reduce the number of races this weekend so performances continue to improve and they gain the confidence they will need to compete at the highest levels.”
Richter secured first place after leaping a distance of 14.77m, in the triple jump, and Ogunleye came in second with a mark of 19.84m. Ogunleye also competed in the long jump finishing in second with a mark of 6.86m.
“The training volumes are dropping so we expect to continue seeing PR's this weekend as they recover from all the hard work,” said Knoedel. “The Horizon League Meet is the biggest meet for us indoors so everything we have done is focused on this competition.”
