CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's track & field teams will compete in split-squad action this weekend, heading to the GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, Mich., and the Chicagoland Championships in Naperville. Both meets will get underway on Friday.
The GVSU Big Meet has 2,465 entries registered from all levels of collegiate athletics and different clubs from around the country. Friday will be the invite sections, while Saturday's competition will feature the open sections.
Senior Andrea Crump will look to continue upon her stellar indoor campaign by competing in both the triple jump and 60-meter dash. Sophomore Tess Ehrhardt and senior Jaime Johnson will both be eyeing sub-5:00 mile times.
"The GVSU Big Meet is going to be exciting, because it is one of the biggest meets in the country," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "Over 2,500 student-athletes will compete, so it will produce some stiff competition and very fast times."
The women's half of the Chicagoland Championships will be held on Friday night. Senior Aimee Schuh will look to bring home the individual titles in both the long jump and 60-meter hurdles. Meanwhile, Sharon Mwale enters this weekend's competition just one-inch shy of the Horizon League's top time in the high jump.
"On the women's side of the Chicagolands, we are looking for a top-three team finish," Knoedel said. "We have four athletes that can come home with individual titles."
In the men's competition, Anthony Hollingsworth and Justen Garth will both look to break the 6.9 second plateau in the 60-meter dash. The 4x400 relay will also be an anticipated race - Ryan Blackmon and Roy Mwale are both in the current top-5 of the open 400-meter competition.
"Although we don't have the depth in the men's competition, we are going to focus on getting as many top performances as possible," said Knoedel. "This should be a very solid weekend for our program."
