INDIANAPOLIS - Junior men's track & field distance runner Photis Karkalis was named the Horizon League's Male Runner of the Week, it was announced by League officials Monday afternoon. The Mount Prospect, Ill., native highlighted the men's team's collective performance at last Friday's Tadd Metzger Carthage Invitational.
Karkalis captured the individual title in the 1-Mile Run at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Facility, crossing the finishing line in 4:19.56. Karkalis out-paced a field of 40 runners in the event.
"It's wonderful to see the Photis be recognized as the Runner of the Week, because he has worked so hard to get to this point," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "Photis does all the extra things that so many leave out, in the weight room, in the training room, and on his own; so I'm pleased to see him running so well.
"He's experienced more than his share of injuries but he has the mental toughness and drive to stay on task when many might have given up," Knoedel added. "In his mile race last Friday, he exploded from the field with two laps to go and closed with an impressive last 400 meters. It showed he will be running 4:10-4:12 in the mile before the season is over."
UIC will resume its indoor season this weekend (Feb. 1-2), when the Flames travel to South Bend, Ind., to take part in the Meyo Invitational.
