Track And Field Post Several Strong Individual Performances At Cardinal Opener

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The UIC men’s and women’s track and field squads continued the 2011 indoor campaign on Friday afternoon with third and fifth place finishes, respectively, at the Cardinal Opener hosted by North Central College.
Jim Knoedel’s men’s team placed third out of six teams with 87 points while the women’s squad finished fifth out of six teams with 74 points.
The men’s team had a strong showing on the track after placing four of the top eight finishers in the 60-meter dash. Anthony Hollingsworth won the event in 7.00 seconds, while teammate Justen Garth ran third in 7.05 seconds. Teammates Josh Stanner and Matt Kubik also scored points for the Flames.
Stanner also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.65 seconds. Kubik placed fifth and Hollingsworth, eighth in that race.
UIC’s men also ran well in the distance events. Tyler Hinckley placed second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:40.91. Freshman Photis Karkalis finished second in the 1-mile event in 4:20.19, while twin brother Angelos Karkalis ran third in the 800-meter run in 1:57.59.
On the women’s side, the Flames posted several outstanding performances in some of the field events. For the second straight week, Andrea Crump won the triple jump with a distance of 11.66 meters. Freshman Ashley Lewis won the long jump with an effort of 5.30 meters, while Constance Sciacero claimed first in the high jump with a height of 1.61 meters.
Sisters Aimee Schuh and Kellie Schuh competed well for the second straight week, as well. Aimee won the 60-meter hurdle event in a time of 9.15 seconds, while Kellie claimed second in pole vault at 3.50 meters.

UIC will be back on the track on Saturday, Jan. 29 when it takes part in the University of Chicago Duals at 11:30 a.m.
