CHICAGO- The UIC men’s and women’s track & field teams will begin the 2014 indoor season as they travel to Allendale, Mich., to compete in the Bob Eubanks Open this Friday, hosted by Grand Valley State.  The men’s first event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. CT., and the first women’s event set to start at 10:15 a.m.

Friday’s meet commences a seven-week indoor season for both teams, capped off by the Horizon League Track & Field Championships on March 1.  The Flames outdoor season will begin in late March.

Live scoring from Fridays meet can be found HERE.

The women’s squad returns six seniors this season, after finishing fourth in the 2013 Indoor and fifth-place in the Outdoor Horizon League Championship.

“We always depend heavily on experienced athletes and seniors typically score the biggest percentage of points at our meets,” said head coach Jim Knoedel. “I expect each one of the seniors to come home with points at every meet.”

Junior Tess Ehrhardt looks to top her 2013 Indoor HL Championship performance when she set a school record in the one-mile run, clocking in with a time of 4:55.54.  Ehrhardt finished the cross country season collecting three straight HL Runner of the Week accolades, multiple Illinois National Guard Student-Athlete of the Week awards and was named HL Scholar-Athlete of the Month for October.

“Performances that she (Ehrhardt) hoped for are now ones that she expects,” said Knoedel.  “It has even made her think about the big meets outdoors with a goal to get to the NCAA West Regional Meet at the University of Arkansas in May.”

Additional notable returnees include, sophomore Emma Preston and senior Jaime Johnson who tout indoor one-mile times of 5:04.33 and 5:06.62, respectively.

Elmhurst, Ill., native Rebecca Zaiter set an outdoor Horizon League record in the 1,500-meter run last year, finishing with a time of 4:27.38.  Zaiter also competed the 800-meter-run finishing in 2:11.90, accounting for 16 team points.

The men’s team took home fifth-place in both the 2013 Indoor and Outdoor HL Championship. Junior Gunnar Sterne set a personal record in the 800-meter run at last year’s outdoor conference meet, finishing in fourth place, with a time of 1:53.64.  Other contributors included, senior Ryan Blackmon who competed in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 48.94 seconds.

Multi-event specialist Matt Marzahl, returns for his senior season after placing fourth overall and collecting a total of 5,585 points while competing in the decathlon during the 2013 Outdoor HL Championship.  Marzahl participated in all ten events and finished first in the high jump, shot put and discus throw.  In the high jump he recorded a score of 1.95 meters, in the shot put competition he logged a throw of 10.99 meters and he threw the discus a distance of 32.56 meters.

Senior Angelos Karkalis finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:39.57 and teammate Andrew Rosete leaped 4:30 meters in the pole vault competition.

In the field events, significant returnees this season include juniors Richmond Richter and Seyi Ogunleye, and distance runners Thomas Kohs and Photis Karkalis

“We will be taking a small group to GVS because of the difficulty in getting training in over the break,” said Knoedel.  “But, the ones we are taking are ready to go and expect to turn in good early season performances.”
