Cleveland, Ohio - The UIC cross country teams finished the season in great form. The men's team took third place and totaled 76 points at the Horizon League Championship Saturday at Squire Valleevue Farm in Cleveland, Ohio. Senior Brian Denk (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) led the Flames in the eight-kilometer race with a sixth-place finish in 26:43.4. The women's team ended the season with 187 points and a seventh-place finish. Junior Jaime Johnson (River Grove, Ill./East Leyden) set the pace for the Flames in the five-kilometer race with a ninth-place finish in 19:42.

The UIC men's team ended the day in third place (76 points), 51 points behind first-place Butler (25 points). Loyola rounded out the top three getting second with 62 points. Milwaukee (127 points) got fourth place, Wright State (135 points) finished fifth and Detroit (145 points) completed the day in sixth. Youngstown State (180 points), Valparaiso (223 points), and Green Bay (259 points) rounded out the field in seventh-, eighth- and ninth-place, respectively.

"It was an extremely sloppy course, so times were slow," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "It is great to have three all-Horizon League runners but next year we hope to have an even better finish at the championship."

The Flames were buoyed by the group of four senior runners, Brian Denk (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), Sam Kehoe (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township), Tyler Hinckley (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) and Roger Pinon (Chicago, Ill/Quigley Prep). Denk finished fourth in 26:43.4 and Kehoe followed close at his heels as he finished in seventh place in 26.44.4. Hinckley ended in 14th place in 27:08.1. Pinon ran to a 24th-place finish in 27:41.1.

On the women's side, the Flames were led by Jaime Johnson (River Grove, Ill./East Leyden) with a ninth-place finish in 19:42. Freshmen Tess Ehrhardt (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and Rebecca Zaiter (Elmhurst, Ill./York) rounded out the top three runners for the Flames. Ehrhardt completed the course in 19:57.4 and finished in 14th place. Zaiter got a 49th-place finish in 21:53.

"We went in hoping for the women's team to get fourth and even though we got seventh we weren't that far out," said Knoedel. "Jaime Johnson and Tess Ehrhardt did a great job getting all-Horizon League honors and were a huge part of our team's success."

Butler won the championship with 28 points and Youngstown State (58 points) and Loyola (75 points) completed the top three. In fourth was Wright State (147 points), followed by fifth-place Cleveland State (167 points) and sixth-place Green Bay (186 points). UIC (187 points) finished in seventh place and was followed by Detroit (189 points) in eighth place. Valparaiso (190 points) ended with a ninth-place finish and Milwaukee (209 points) finished 10th.
