Terre Haute, Ind. - University of Illinois at Chicago head cross country coach Jim Knoedel decided to take his top runners to the Pre-National competition at Indiana State and send his less-seasoned athletes to the UW-Parkside Invitational for further experience on Saturday afternoon.

Both contingents competed well, as Jenni Goebel and Danny Smith were the stars of the afternoon leading the way for the Flames.

Only one team was filled for UIC, as the men put together five competitors for team score of 570, good for 21st-place in the 25-team competition at Parkside.

At the Pre-National competition, in one of the most competitive fields in all of collegiate cross country, the six UIC runners made their presence felt in Terre Haute.

Junior Jenni Goebel continued to raise her stock, as she placed ninth in the open race at Pre-Nats. Goebel covered the 6K course in a swift 21:36 to lead the Flames.

Sophomore Lizet Diaz ran well finishing in 56th-place with a solid time of 22:38.

Fellow second-year athlete Sara Jeffers also turned in a good race placing 63rd in 22:44.

On the men's side of the competition, senior Danny Smith grabbed 44th-place in an impressive time of 25:52 to lead the men's corps in Indiana.

Joe Marren (26:33) and Rich Daubert (26:38) also competed in solid fashion taking 125th and 130th, respectively.

At Parkside, Tristan Roche led the Flames' men with an 89th-place finish in 27:16.
