Kenosha, Wis. - The UIC men's and women's cross country teams competed in their final tune-up before the Horizon League Championships on Saturday as they ran at the UW-Parkside Invitational.

The men's squad finished the 32-team meet in 15th place while the women's team, which did not qualify for a team score, was paced by the strong finishes of sophomore Jenni Goebel and freshman Lizet Diaz. The meet was run under extremely muddy and wet conditions, which slowed the field down considerably.

Goebel continued her run on top-five finishes as she placed a season-best second in the 5K race in a time of 18:33. Diaz, meanwhile, continued her steady improvement, crossing in 12th place in a time of 19:03.

Jessica Streit (94th/20:41) and Sara Jeffers (155th/21:31) also competed for the Flames in the women's race, which featured 325 runners.

On the men's side, junior's Rich Daubert and Joe Marren finished side-by-side to lead UIC. Daubert crossed in 70th position in 28:02 while Marren placed 71st in 28:03 in the 8K event. Sophomore Tristan Roche was the next Flame to finish, placing 126th in 28:43. John Simon (145th/29:04), Whitney Burns (162nd/29:17) and Darryl Gras-Partyka (257th/30:56) also competed in the 328-man race for UIC.

The Flames are now off for a week before hosting the 2001 Horizon League Championships on October 27.
