KENOSHA, Wis. – Freshmen Emma Preston earned a seventh-place finish in the 5K women’s race at the 2012 Lucian Rosa Invitational hosted by UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis on Saturday morning. The men’s top finisher was freshman Pat Niyork who crossed the tape in 35th place in the men’s 8K race. The women’s squad took home fourth-place honors, while the men earned 10th overall.
“Our focus was on pack running this weekend,” said head coach Jim Knoedel. “The women had a group of six through two miles and our men had a group of eight through three miles. Emma has shown incredible talent over the last mile and Pat continues to impress the coaching staff. Our team is closing the gap between our top seven runners and we are looking to peak at the Horizon League Championships.”
For the third time this season, Preston paced the women’s squad with a team-best time of 18:28.50 as Saturday marked her first competitive race since Sept. 14. Trailing Preston were four Flames’ who notched season-best marks in Rebecca Zaiter (18:52.70, 24th), Lauren Lindholm (18:53.70, 27th), Grace Millhorn (19:04.10, 33rd) and Jamie Johnson (19:06.50, 35th).
Niyork has now piloted the men’s team in three-straight meets as he finished the race in a time of 26:08.00, just three seconds off a season-best. He was followed closely by Photis Karkalis (26:14.70) and Angelos Karkalis (26:20.00) who placed 45th and 48th, respectively. Freshman Billy Clink made his return to action for a 56th place finish in a time of 26:28.30, his first race since Sept. 14.
