Sept. 22, 2001

Savoy, Ill. - The UIC men's cross country team posted a 12th-place finish at the 2001 University of Illinois' Illini Invitational in Savoy, Ill., Saturday morning while the short-handed women's squad got a strong showing by Jenni Goebel, who took fifth overall.

The men's squad finished with a team score of 341 while the U.S. Naval Academy edged out Loyola for first place with 87 points to the Ramblers' 92. Iowa finished third with 99 points followed by Butler (102), Cincinnati (105), Illinois (155), Northern Iowa (157), Wichita State (185), Illinois State (211), Southern Illinois (251) Valparaiso (297), UIC (341), Bradley (393) and UW-Green Bay (419).

Due to fielding just four runners, the women's squad did not record a team score.

Rich Daubert led the way for the Flames, taking 45th place in the 152-man race with a time of 25:25. Joe Marren was next to come in for UIC as he finished in 76th with a time of 26:02. Mikhail Davidyan (94th/26:45), Tristan Roche (99th/26:51), Russ Riberto (113th/27:23) and Whitney Burns (140th/29:19) rounded out the UIC runners.

On the women's side, Goebel turned in a strong outing to finish fifth with a time of 17:41, 19 seconds off of first-place Rachel Evjen out of Northwestern. Lizet Diaz crossed second for UIC with a time of 18:52, which was good for 59th place. Jessica Streit (118th/20:37) and Sara Jeffers (121st/20:48) rounded out the Flames' runners in the 145-woman field.

Both squads will be in action closer to home next weekend as they are slated to participate in Loyola's Lakefront Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10:00 a.m.
