DETROIT- Both UIC cross country squads ran without their top runners Saturday at the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Cross Country Invitational.

On the women's side, UIC finished fifth of ten teams. Freshman Megan Gojney was the top Flames finisher, taking 12th and covering the 5,000-meter course in 19:38.00. Freshman Jaime Johnson also finished in the top 20 for the Flames, taking 19th place with a time of 19:57.00.

"I tried to get the team to run a controlled race," UIC head coach Jim Knoedel said. "We weren't racing as hard as we could. We have a big meet next weekend and I wanted to make sure we were ready for that."
The men's squad took fifth place out of eight teams at the event. Sophomore Matt Zaluckyj was the first to cross the finishline from UIC, recording a time of 21:51.00 in the four-mile race to take 26th place overall.

"We didn't run our top five males," Knoedel said. "We wanted to rest them for next weekend. We are focusing on having a big race at the Illinois Intercollegiates. That will be a big race for us."

The Flames head to the Illinois Intercollegiates next Friday afternoon. The annual meet is being held in Normal, Ill., hosted by Illinois State University.
