Cross Country Returns To Action In Peoria|

Peoria, Ill. After a two-week break from competition, the UIC cross country team resumed their season by taking on a packed field at the 18th Annual Bradley Open on Friday afternoon.
Junior Mikhail Davidyan led the UIC men with an individual time of 26:15.12 at the 8-kilometer course, finishing 46th in a field of 184. The Flames, who finished tenth overall in the men's 13-team Division 1-A university competition, were also paced by freshman Sam Watson (54/26:27.11), Tristan Roche (75/27:05.81), and Jim Sulzberger (78/27:08.17).
Southern Illinois took the men's Division 1-A crown at the event, while Lewis University captured the college division team title. Northern Iowa's Velibot Redojevic (24:47.99) edged the Salukis' Eli Baker (27:49.80) for first place.
Senior Jenni Goebel led the way on the women's side, finishing 20th individually at a time of 18:22 to push the Flames to a sixth place team finish in the 14-team Division 1-A university competition. Junior Lizet Diaz placed 34th with a time of 18:46, followed by Susie Martinez, who placed 44th with a time of 18:57 in her second collegiate race.
It was the first event for Martinez since winning the UIC Invitational on August 30 and earning Horizon League Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.
UIC received excellent performances from freshmen Rachel Covert (49th/19:03), Andrea Dennison (51/19:05), and Lisa Petty (69/19:31), giving all six UIC participants places in the Top 70 among a field of 173 at the 5-kilometer event.
The University of Missouri's 17th-ranked women's squad won the Division 1-A university competition, while Olivet Nazarene won the college division team title. Individually, Marquette's Heidi Lindeman (17:38) held off Missouri's impressive combo of Valerie Lauver (17:40) and Jill Peterson (17:41) for the win.
The UIC men's and women's cross country teams are back in action next Saturday, September 20th as they travel to Kenosha, Wis. for the Midwestern Collegiate Championships at 12 p.m.
