Youngstown, Ohio - After completing the first day of the 2008 Horizon League Championships, the UIC men's track and field team finds itself in third place.

UIC has tallied a combined 29 points and sits behind Valparaiso (31) and host Youngstown State (51).

Joe Bailey finished out his career strongly in the hammer throw with a solid fourth-place finish. The senior garnered a career-best toss of 49.94 meters. Bailey also turned in a heave of 35.33 meters in the discus.

In the 10,000-meter run, Alex Sutphen led the way earning another fourth-place finish for the Flames. Sutphen clocked in with a time of 32:23.62.

The remainder of the first day of competition included preliminary races in the running events.

Cory Renner (100-meter dash), Stephen Royal (800-meter run), and Lewis Brown (800-meter run) all advanced to today's finals.

The women's side was paced by Kristen McMurray and Monique Bostert in the throwing events. McMurray finished ninth in the hammer throw with a heave of 44.05 meters. Bostert placed eighth in the discus with a toss of 38.47 meters.

The Flames will conclude the final day of competition today (May 9) beginning at 8 a.m. CST in Youngstown, Ohio.
