Indianapolis, Ind. - University of Illinois at Chicago sprinter Gabe Rivera advanced to the finals of the 100-meter and 200-meter dash to lead the Flames in the first day of the 2004 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Butler, on Thursday evening.

In the 100-meter dash, Rivera placed second in his heat and fourth overall with a time of 11.36. Rivera followed that up in the 200-meter dash, placing third in his heat with a season-best time of 22.17 and sixth overall.

After one day, UW-Milwaukee is leading with 68 points, followed by Youngstown State (39 points), Butler (39), Loyola (20), Detroit (11) and UIC (9).

Senior jumper Bob Thurnhoffer also advanced to the finals of the long jump with a fourth-place, career-best leap of 21'10".

Second-day Horizon League Championship action will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
