Track & Field Wraps Up Competition in Outdoor Openers|

CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's track & field teams opened the 2012 outdoor season with a combined 16 top-10 finishes at the respective Mike Poehlein Invitational and Raleigh Relays Saturday. Highlighting the Flames' performance was junior Justin Higginbotham, who earned medalist honors in the men's triple jump at the Poehlein Invite.
"I was very happy with our results today, especially from the Raleigh Relays," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "Sam Kehoe had a career day, and we had fast times from Ariel Kirby, Matt Zaluckyj and Josh Stanner. Kellie Schuhdid very well in wet conditions in the pole vault."
"At Purdue, I was excited to see Michael Stupka open with a fast time in the 400-meter, and it was great to see Justin Higginbotham pick up a victory in the triple jump. Aimee Schuhgot off to a good start in her first hurdle competition since last season."
Higginbotham leaped a meet-best 14.85 meters in the finals, out-pacing two Horizon League foes from Valparaiso. The Flames' next best individual finish on the men's side was Michael Stupka in the 400-meter dash, who crossed home in 48.80 seconds, and finished third at the Poehlein Invitational. Additionally, Photis Karkalistallied a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run (1:55.74) in West Lafayette.
Other top-10 finishes for the UIC men's team at the Poehlein Invite were as follows: Nate Kamm in the pole vault (4.60 meters; 9th), Higginbotham in the high jump (1.92 meters; t-7th), Matt Marzahl in the high jump (1.96 meters; t-7th), Matt Kubik in the 100-meter dash (10.86 seconds; 10th), Joey Cieniewicz in the 800-meter run (1:59.48; 9th) and John Glassin the steeplechase (1:59.48; 8th).
At the Raleigh Relays, Matt Zaluckyj crossed the finishing line in 1:52.55 in the 800-meter run, finishing eighth in the field. Meanwhile, Sam Kehoe posted a career-best time (30:54.52) in the 10,000 meter run to finish sixth, and Josh Stannerfinished 14th in the 200-meter dash (22.62 seconds). Stanner also ran the 400-meter run in 49.86 seconds.
The women's team accounted for six total top-10 finishes, highlighted by Kellie Schuh finishing fourth in the pole vault (3.75 meters) at the Raleigh Relays. At the Poehlein Invitational, UIC posted a trio of seventh-place tallies, with Constance Sciacero (1.62 meters) and Sharon Mwale (1.60 meters) tying in the high jump, and Aimee Schuhtaking seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (14.41 seconds). Schuh was competing on the hurdles for the first time since last spring, after sitting out the indoor campaign as a medical redshirt.
Notably, Jaime Johnson finished ninth in the 5,000-meter run (18:30.00), while Katie Wallace took 10th in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finishing line in 13.20 seconds. Junior newcomer Ariel Kirbyfinished 14th in the 800-meter in Raleigh, finishing the race in 2:11.73.
UIC will compete in the Chicagoland Championships next Friday and Saturday (April 6-7).
