Men's and Women's Track and Field Finish Sixth At Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships
March 1, 2010 ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The UIC men's and women's track and field squads each took home a sixth-place finish at the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend. The men's team finished with 45 points, while the women garnered 41 points in the two-day event. Milwaukee's men's and women's teams each captured team titles at the event which was hosted by the University of Detroit. For the men, it was their seventh straight title and the women won their fourth championship in the last five years. Senior Monique Bostert was the only UIC individual athlete to claim a championship at the event, claiming the women's weight throw crown with a distance of 17.71 meters. "We got another tremendous effort from Monique Bostert in the weight," said UIC head coach Jim Knoedel. "On her last throw, she went from third to first to win the title in the same manner she did in 2009." A pair of sophomores also made solid contributions on the women's side for the Flames; Constance Sciacero took second in the high jump with a height of 5'2 ¼", while Toni Ogundare ran third in the 800 meter event with a time of 2:16.91. In the men's competition, the Flames claimed the 4 x 400 relay crown with a time of 3:21.91. The distance medley relay squad also finished second in a time of 10:10.71 to earn eight valuable points for UIC. Despite the second-place finish, Knoedel was impressed with the effort of his distance medley entrants. "They finished second, but they just missed the school record and almost beat a powerful Butler team after an exciting head-to-head battle," said Knoedel. Nate Kamm was a pleasant surprise according to Knoedel; he entered the meet ranked sixth in the pole vault, but finished second on the strength of a personal-best effort of 15'1".
Newcomer Justin Higginbotham finished third in the men's high jump (6'4 ¼") and fourth in the triple jump (45'5 ¼"). It was the highest showing in either event by a freshman in the Horizon League. The Flames next will head to Notre Dame, Ind. for the Alex Wilson Invitational on Friday, March 5th and Saturday, March 6th for the conclusion of the indoor campaign.
