Feb. 17, 2003
Indianapolis, Ind. - Sophomore Whitney Burns turned in a career-best, seventh-place finish of 1:54.78 in the 800-meter run at the Cannon IV Classic, hosted by Butler University on Saturday afternoon.
"Whitney ran a very exciting race," UIC head coach Jim Knoedel said. "I think he showed (on Saturday) that he can place in the top three at the conference championships."
Knoedel also lauded the performance of senior Joe Marren. Marren placed 13th overall in the Mile Run with a season-best time of 4:18.47.
"Joe Marren ran a super mile," Knoedel said. "It was a real breakthrough effort for Joe, who just ran a real strong last 800.
"I think you'll see better times from Joe in the weeks to come."
Knoedel likes what he sees of his squad, with the Horizon League championships two weeks away.
"All in all it was a very productive weekend," Knoedel said. "It was exciting to see the improvement in times and we have a lot to look forward to in the weeks to come."
UIC will be back in action on Friday evening, as they will travel north to participate in the UW-Milwaukee Quadrangular at 4:00 p.m.
