Track & Field Competes Well At The Chicago Duals

CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's track and field teams spent the day Saturday competing in a series of dual meets hosted by the University of Chicago. The men's squad finished second out of eight teams, falling only to the host school. The women's team finished the day in fifth place. The men were led by senior Farrahadoon Durrani who won the 800 meter race with a finals time of 1:57.36. Durrani, who was nominated for Horizon League Runner of the Week for his performance was also a member of the 4 x 400 relay team that won with a time of 3:25.66. Lewis Brown, Erik Perez and Josh Stanner joined Durrani for that event. Newcomers Roy Mwale and Anthony Hollingsworth continued to run well for head coach Jim Knoedel's squad. Mwale won the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.77 and finished fourth in the tightly-contested 200 meter event with a mark of 23.11 seconds. Hollingsworth finished second in the 200 meter dash, three-hundredths of a second ahead of Mwale, with a time of 23.08. He also tied for third in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.67 seconds. In the field events, Justin Higginbotham took second in the men's triple jump with a distance of 13.28 meters. He narrowly edged out teammate Brandon Gale who was third at 13.26 meters. On the women's side, Aimee Schuh won the 55 meter hurdles, her third such victory early in this indoor campaign. The hurdles were the only event Schuh entered on Saturday.
Mary Brennan took third in the 800 meter run with a finals time of 2:23.59 and was also a member of the distance medley squad which captured the top spot with a time of 12:58.19. Monique Bostert finished third in the women's weight throw with a distance of 17.24 meters. Next up, the Flames will travel to Normal, Ill. for the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Three members of the men's team, meanwhile, will be in South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational. Durrani and Brown will run in the 800 meter race, while Brian Denk will compete in the 3,000 meter event. |
