    Track & Field Wraps up Competition at Saturday's Huskie Open

    Men's team cruises to eight first-place finishes

    Gabe Rivera is starting his seventh season as the Flames assistant track & field coach. Rivera has served as an assistant with the Flames since 2009 working primarily with the sprinters, jumpers and multi-event athletes. During the 2013-14 track & field seasons Rivera coached Horizon League triple jump champions Seyi Ogunleye (Outdoor) and Richmond Richter (Indoor).

    In 2006, Rivera spent three seasons working as an assistant coach at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM. He was in charge of the sprint and jump training. While at the NCAA II level, he worked with athletes who provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in men's triple jump, men's and women's javelin and men's 4X100-meter relay.

    From 2005-06, Rivera's first coaching stop was at College of DuPage, where he served as the sprint coach. While at College of DuPage, the Chaparral men won the NCJAA III national championships while coaching national champions in the 100m and 4x100m relay.

    As a student-athlete, Rivera was an all-American while on the College of DuPage Track and Field Team from 2000-2001. After which he finished his collegiate career with the University of Illinois at Chicago. Rivera earned all-conference honors in the 100m will at UIC.

    Rivera obtained his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2004 and his master's degree in physical education in 2008. In addition to his education, Rivera holds USTFCCCA Sprint, Hurdle & Relay Event Specialist Certification and is USATF certified coach. Rivera and his wife Melisa have a ninth month old son, Gabe Jr.
