INDIANAPOLIS - In its ongoing effort to recognize student-athletes for their success in the classroom, the Horizon League office announced the members of the Academic All-League teams for the spring season Wednesday. Nine UIC student-athletes from six sports received the honor.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.

The women's tennis team led the way for the Flames, boasting three student-athletes that were recognized. Linda Hricistova, who carries a 3.81 GPA, led the way, and was joined on the team by both Ilinca Cristescu (3.75 GPA) and Mariya Kovaleva (3.41). The trio helped UIC capture its unprecedented 15th-consecutive Horizon League Championship, and 13th-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament last spring.

The UIC women's track & field team also had multiple honorees, with sophomore Ashley Williams and junior Andrea Crump both chalking up Academic All-League plaudits. Williams carries a 3.94 GPA as a biology major, while Crump boasts a 3.5 GPA in UIC's sociology curriculum. Williams was also named to the Horizon League's Academic All-League team during the winter for her performance on and off the track during the indoor season. Crump recorded five first-place finishes in the triple jump, 100-meter dash and long jump during the outdoor campaign.

Senior Steve McGuiggan represented the Flames' baseball team on the Academic All-League squad. McGuiggan, who wrapped up his career with a 3.33 GPA in the communications program, hit .283 last season, and started 31-of the 35 contests he appeared in. McGuiggan tallied 32 hits and scored 22 runs on the season.

Coryn Schmit, who was also named UIC's Co-Female Athlete of the Year, represented UIC's softball team as an Academic All-Leaguer. Schmit, who carries a flawless 4.0 GPA as a movement sciences major, was a First-Team All-Horizon League honoree after hitting .315 and tallying 40 hits, including 10 home runs and eight doubles. She helped lead the Flames to the Horizon League Softball Tournament Championship in May, marking UIC's first postseason appearance since the 2004 campaign.

Gautham Oroskar from the men's tennis team, bioenginerring major with a 3.95 GPA, also garnered recognition. Oroskar finished the spring season with the best singles winning percentage (.875) on the team. He also ranked second with 11 singles victories in just his first season with the program.

Erik Perez, who also chalked up Academic All-League honors during the indoor track & field season, was also named to the squad for his performance during the outdoor campaign. Perez, who specializes in the 800-meter run, boasts a 3.91 GPA at UIC - he is pursuing a bachelor's degree in the Teaching of Math.
