Twelve UIC Student-Athletes Earn 2003 Horizon League Spring All-Academic Team Honors

Chicago, Ill. - The University of Illinois at Chicago placed 12 student-athletes on the 2003 Spring Academic All-Horizon League Teams, which were released on Thursday morning. The 12 student athletes represent five sports, including baseball, softball, men's tennis, women's tennis and men's track and field. The UIC men's tennis team, which was the UIC Academic Team of the Year, had four representatives on the all-academic men's tennis squad with Nick Bodmer (Psychology), Neil Ahluwalia (Biology), Amol Desai (Psychology) and Ken Howrey (Business) being honored. The Flames placed three members on the women's tennis all-academic team in Nicole Derouin (Accounting), Zorica Malesevic (Finance) and Zvjezdana Malesevic (Economics) while baseball - Weber Bowen (Finance), Ryan Martin (Liberal Arts) - and men's track and field - Jon White (Accounting), Rich Daubert (Engineering) had two UIC athletes each of their respective squads. Cameron Astiazaran (Criminal Justice) represented UIC on the Horizon League All-Academic Softball Team. The Spring Academic All-Horizon League Teams are selected by the Horizon League Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives. Nominees must meet the following criteria: 1) a cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.25 or better on a 4.00 scale; 2) have completed at least three semesters at the same institution; and 3) be a starter or significant contributor in a League-sponsored sport.
Butler led the League with 22 academic honorees. UIC (12), Loyola (11) and UW-Milwaukee (10) also landed double-digit selections followed by Youngstown State (9), Detroit (8), Wright State (6), UW-Green Bay (3) and Cleveland State (1).
