CHICAGO- The UIC men’s tennis team (1-4) will face Chicago on Saturday in a non-conference matchup. Competition gets underway at 6 p.m. (CT) at the Five Seasons Sports Club in Burr Ridge, Ill.
The Flames return to competition after earning their first win of the season Feb. 8, as they defeated Western Illinois, 7-0, at the Hinsdale Racquet Club.
UIC was undefeated throughout singles play when Alexander Raa began the night at No. 1 defeating Christoph Haertel, 6-5, 6-4. Alan Reifer took his No. 2 match 6-5, 6-4 over Mitch Granger.
At No. 3, Carl Hedstrom downed Max Cederkall, 6-2, 6-2, and Isaac Lloveras beat Brandon Meeker in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4.
Eric Pontow was victorious at No. 5 against Chris Bunch, defeating him 6-3, 6-1. Rounding out singles play, Christopher Cole stopped Brett Furmanski, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6.
In doubles, Pontow and Lloveras teamed up at No. 1, but fell short to Haertel and Granger, 6-5. Reifer and Hedstrom showed no weakness at No. 2 when they downed Cederkall and Meeker, 6-5. Closing out doubles play, Raa joined Nate Campanile to face Bunch and Furmanski at No. 3, winning 6-0.
The Maroons have gone 3-1 so far this season, most recently defeating Augustana, 9-0. The Flames are 2-1 against Chicago since 2010, with last year’s match getting cancelled due to weather.
