Tennis Teams Thwarted At ITA Regional Competitions

Oct. 28, 2002

East Lansing, Mich. - The University of Illinois at Chicago men's and women's tennis teams knew they were in for a tough weekend as they headed to their respective competition site for the ITA Regionals.

Competing against the best the Midwest had to offer, the women's team journeyed to East Lansing, Michigan, while the men's team headed to Madison, Wisconsin.

In East Lansing, head coach Shannon Tully's team had a trio of players competing.

In the main draw of the singles bracket, Nicole Derouin was knocked off by Ruth Barnes of Northwestern, 6-3, 7-5. In the consolation bracket, Derouin was upended by Szilvia Keleman of DePaul, 6-1, 6-1 (10-8).

Ayca Gumuscu failed to qualify for the main draw, as she was taken out by Kelly Nelson of Notre Dame, 6-0, 6-3.

In doubles action, Derouin teamed up with freshman Corey Steven in the main draw.

The duo was knocked off in the first round by the fourth-seeded team of Hawkins and D'Amelio of Eastern Michigan (8-3), but came back in the consolation round to beat Horizon League rivals Wendoff and Gauseyensk of UW-Green Bay, 8-3.

The men's team also came up empty-handed, as Hans Neufeld's squad ran into some heavy hitters.

Newcomer Yeugen Ryeznik did not qualify for the main draw, as he was defeated by Johan Bergenas of Iowa in the singles qualifier, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

In singles main draw play, Nick Bodmer couldn't get past Jeremy Wurtzman of Ohio State, as the Buckeye defeated Bodmer, 6-3, 6-2.

In the doubles draw, Bodmer teamed with Ken Howrey, but were edged in the first round by Zeder and Hobson of Illinois, 9-7.

The racquets will now be rested for the Flames' teams, as they are off until January.
