Ann Arbor, Mich.- Top singles players Karol Zarucki and Ivan Kovalev were in action the past two days for the University of Illinois at Chicago men's tennis team at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regionals at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.

On Thursday, Zarucki chalked up a singles win in the first round of qualifying, downing Cleveland State's Eric Winn in a comeback 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 win.

Zarucki was actually down 5-3 in the second set, but the senior came back to force a third and take the win.

On Friday Zarucki was downed in the second round by fourth-seeeded Mike McCarthy of Indiana, 6-4, 6-3.

Kovalev had a tough match, losing in his first round qualifier to Michigan State's Adam Monich, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, the combo of Zarucki and Kovalev lost in main draw doubles play to Damar Johnson and Octavian Nicodim of Louisville, 8-3.

"They played tough and we just couldn't get it going," said UIC head coach Hans Neufeld.

Overall, Neufeld was pleased with how his guys battled during the weekend.

"We played pretty good," said Neufeld.

The Wilson/ITA Midwest Regionals run through Tuesday.
