East Lansing, Mich.- Although the first-day match results were disappointing, two members of the UIC men's tennis team turned in solid performances in defeat during the qualifying round of the 2003 ITA Omni Orrington Men's Tennis Midwest Regional Championships held at Michigan State University on Thursday.

Junior Karol Zarucki and sophomore Paul Glendenning, who both showed flashes of brilliance throughout the 2003 fall campaign, were selected to compete in the qualifying field of 64 players representing 31 top teams in the midwest region.

Zarucki fell in the first set of his match with fourth-seed Michael Heule of Ball State, 6-1, but never gave in, battling Heule every step of the way until Zarucki was downed 7-5 in the final set.

Glendenning was also tough, but the Rockford native was unable to to get past Valparaiso's Nick Kooyers in a 6-3, 6-4 loss.

The ITA Midwest Regional Championships resume with second round qualifying play on Friday, Oct. 24th and main draw singles action and doubles action on Saturday, Oct. 25th, in East Lansing, Mich.
